Responsible safari tips
- Choose operators who keep distance from animals and turn off engines at sightings. Ask before booking.
- Never feed elephants at roadsides (Udawalawe and Habarana roads). It causes conflicts and injuries.
- Skip elephant rides and attractions that chain elephants. The Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe releases orphans back to the wild.
- Go early: jeeps enter at about 6am, and animals are most active in the first hours.
- Wear neutral colours, bring binoculars, a hat, sunscreen and water. Phone signal is weak inside parks.
